What A Difference A Year Makes

Well, it happened! It’s August 5th, which means the girls have officially been home from the hospital for a year. That seemed worthy of another post. It’s been almost two months since the last one, so.

For comparison you can reference Home At Last for where we were a year ago.

Standing

The biggest thing at this point is that they are both able to stand without assistance, though Aspen has raced past Liz in this department. She’s been standing unassisted for a bit now and has even started taking some small steps. She’s not really walking in any meaningful way, yet, but she’s so close. Liz is a little more hesitant to stand at all, but it is starting to happen.

They’re both prolific crawlers and they’re quite good at so-called “cruising.” That’s where they hold onto objects or furniture and step sideways to get around. These are all very important developments.

Communication

They’ve both been improving in their ability to let us know what they want. I don’t think they’re quite with their 14-month-old cohort and maybe even a little behind their adjusted 12-month ideal, but they are improving. Liz will point, though we’re not yet sure what the purpose of that is. She will hold up applesauce packs or snack bags to us to have us open them. According to the speech therapist, them recognizing that they need to “ask” us for help is an important developmental thing.

They have also figured out what food in our hands looks like. If they see that we have something, they’ll often cry to indicate that they want it. For example, we went to a meet & greet for Wavy’s kindergarten class and they had snacks, including Goldfish™️. They saw that Sam had a bag, recognized what they were, and cried out to get it. Again, crying isn’t the ideal response, but the fact that they are recognizing the food and indicating that they want it is a big step in the right direction.

Daycare

They’ve been attending daycare now for almost two months. They seem to have somewhat gotten used to it. Because of COVID, I get very little exposure to how that goes, but Sam does get to see them. I know that they play with the other kids in the class, but I’ve been told that when the class is put in their buggy to go for a walk or go outside, the girls will often hold each other’s hands. It seems that they’ve already begun the process of become best frenemies.

Next

Of course, we’re hoping they’ll get the walking thing down. There’s also some hesitancy because that drastically increases mobility. With two of them, that seems daunting, but that’s something that most parents have to deal with.

We’re also hoping that they’ll start picking up a little more language. We’re slowly working on sign language. That can be a great tool before they’re vocalizing very much and can help in general with their cognitive abilities.

Mostly, we’re just having fun with our babies and fighting the mess that seems to be ever present in our house. Whoever said three kids was easy was wrong, but also, this isn’t so bad.

Family

As I mentioned, 🎉 Wavy is starting Kindergarten 🎉. It’s so hard to believe that she is old enough for that, but she’ll be turning 6️⃣ in November. She’ll be in Mrs. Smith’s class at Tri-City Adventist School. Not only will she get a great Adventist education, but it’s next door to Small World Learning Center where Sam works and the twins attend. This makes getting her to and from school very easy, and she’s always close to Sam.

Until next time…
