Time Marches On!

It’s been quite a while since there’s been a post here. There’s just been so much going on. Six months seemed like a good reason to do this, though.

Also, you may notice that I missed by a day. Better late than never, I guess.

Updates

So, what’s happened since we last talked? The girls have now been home longer than they were in the NICU. They’ve also grown so much. Just take a look at this photo from the week they came home vs. now.

And Now!

And Now!

They’ve continued to grow by leaps and bounds and start to develop their own personalities.

Aspen is our giggler. When she’s in the mood, she has the cutest little giggle. Their smiles are also soooo cute, but of course we’d think that 😄.

They’re both still doing OT and are still experiencing some issues due to being so early, but with exercises, they’re progressing well.

We also see a dietition every few weeks to make sure that the formula (Neocate1) is still the right choice. She checks their weight and size and just makes sure that we’re giving them an appropriate dose. For the time being, we’ll stick to Neocate just to avoid any potential issues.

We have started feeding them “real” food, though!

They’re still getting most of their nutrients from the formula, but they’ll eat a whole jar of baby food no problem.

Shoot, it’s been so long I forget how much just hasn’t been shared on the blog!

They sleep in their cribs! When we first brought them home we had them in our room. The didn’t seem to want to sleep unless they were in a swing (we know, you’re not supposed to do that) or being held. I don’t remember why, but we decided to try them in their cribs in their own room one night. They took right to it and have been doing so ever since! They usually don’t have much trouble getting to sleep, either.

As far as sleeping, they have gone as long as 12 hours, but typically are between three and six hours until they’re hungry again. Yes, we are aware of how lucky we are to have them sleeping that well that easily. Even Wavy wasn’t doing this well this early.

They make lots of eye contact and love to talk. They also love their big sister. She’ll often go up to them when they’re upset and make faces and get them giggling. It’s amazing to watch that connection between them.

Overall, they’re doing really well and we just feel so blessed to be where we are. We have three healthy girls and just keep enjoying having them.

Chickens

Now for a quick family update. We decided we wanted to get some chickens. Partly just for pets, but we’re also hoping for some eggs. We managed to find someone giving away a coop and someone else giving away a couple chickens on Facebook. Of course, we’ve spent money on other supplies like a feeder and food. We also had to find someone selling a heated waterer. Theirs froze on the first night and the farm supply store didn’t have any in stock. We’ve got it taken care of though.

So far no eggs, but I think I may need to build some better nesting boxes. You definitely get what you pay for with a free, built-from-scraps coop, but it keeps them safe and warm.

Speaking of safe, Sunshine has been hanging out with Papa as long as we’ve had the chickens. He came home to see them for the first time today. It’s going to get some work to have him be safe with them, good thing the coop keeps him out.
