Bottles

I know I’ve been talking about bottles a lot, but it’s a big part of what we’re doing every day. Elizabeth is still going pretty slow, but we have to build up her muscles and get her familiar with how to go about it. The OT helped Sam with some steps to help her get the feel for it. A big part of that is tipping the bottle down at appropriate intervals to get milk out of the nipple. This is a “reminder” that she needs to breathe which helps her stay focused on the task instead of getting tired out.

Elizabeth Working On A Bottle

What I failed to mention yesterday is that Aspen has been moved to a different bottle/nipple. This Dr. Brown bottle is something that we could take her home with. Another step closer to going home.

…but

When I went on my lunch visit today the nurse had some things to tell me regarding Aspen. Specifically, she had had a pretty significant event before I showed up. While she was sleeping, she had desaturated significantly and, similar to Elizabeth a few days ago (35 Weeks), had to have some help with blow-by. Just another important reminder that they really, really need to be where they are right now.

On the upside, about 20 minutes after her event, she had her first bowel movement since Saturday. Similar to Elizabeth, it was a good sized one. They’ve both responded similarly to being switched to neocate. The first few days nothing happens and then they get it all out in one fell swoop.

Extra Bits

As some of you have undoubtedly noticed, I had a second post yesterday (Monday) called “Stats.” This is where I will be updating their weights and other measurements. I may add other information to it as well. It is your “one-stop-shop” for any information you would like to see about the girls and where they are in their progress. At some point I would like to add some historical element so we can see trends, but I haven’t had time to figure that out from a technical perspective (at least the way my nerdy self wants to see it done).
