The Unicorn
Updates for Saturday, June 13 and morning of Sunday, June 14
Saturday
Today was also somewhat relaxed. There wasn’t a whole lot going on. We’re still doing twice-a-days with the girls. We had Wavy go with “Auntie Pita” and “Cousin Lauren” and pick out some stuffed animals that the girls can have in their isolettes. I apparently didn’t grab any pictures of them. I’ll have to remember to do that.
Aspen’s IV in her hand finally “went bad” tonight. This is apparently common and hers actually lasted longer than sister’s did.
The interesting part about it was that the nurses had a difficult time getting a new one put in. It didn’t seem like they had much trouble getting into the vein; the problem came when they went to flush it with saline. Every attempt by two nurses (at least 3 attempts) ended either with a failed poke or blowing out the vein with the saline. While I know it isn’t uncommon for that to happen to infants, hers was likely confounded by her ruddiness (related to her being jaundiced).
The second nurse eventually decided to check to see if she could find a good vein in Aspen’s scalp. They did indicate that this isn’t ideal but may actually last longer (less movement than hands or feet).
Well, they were successful.
The nurses told me they call this The Unicorn. It’s quite the look. Unfortunately, it also requires taping to her hair which will make it painful to remove.
At this point, each girl has their own “special” attachment; Elizabeth has her central line and Aspen has her “Unicorn”.
Sunday
When we showed up this morning we noticed that they finally had their footprints taken. I grabbed pictures of them at the end of each of their isolettes.
Extra Bits
I’ve created a collection on Pixieset. There’s a link up in the menu (by default it will open in the same tab/window1). Here’s a link to it as well (this one will open in its own tab).
